This issue’s featured artwork is a bright, bold sunflower—a perfect symbol of the Colorado summer just beginning to bloom. Created in rich, vivid colored pencil, the piece captures the warmth of the sun, the strength of the stalk, and the joyful energy that sunflowers always seem to radiate. It’s a celebration of the season’s arrival and the natural beauty that inspires so much of my work.

Let the sunshine in!

Why I Work in Colored Pencil

I choose colored pencil as my primary art medium because it offers a unique blend of control, precision, and expressive depth. With careful layering and subtle shading techniques, I can achieve rich textures and lifelike detail that bring my images of nature—especially flowers and birds—to life.

Two side-by-side colored pencil artworks by Greene Sun Art: on the left, a blue jay perched on a branch above colorful primrose flowers; on the right, a branch of pink apple blossoms set against a bright blue sky.

Colored pencil gives me the control to draw fine detail and the freedom to layer color until it glows. Through patient shading and glazing, petals gain structure, feathers shimmer, and quiet moments in nature feel intimate and vivid—exactly the qualities I love bringing to life.

Inspirational quote on an abstract floral background: ‘I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way—things I had no words for.’ — Georgia O’Keeffe.

A quick spotlight on Roger Bottoms, a classmate from my Boulder days who turned a hands‑on hobby into a heartfelt craft. Working from his Colorado shop, he hand‑turns pens that blend wood, acrylic, and artistry—each one a unique, functional piece. Browse his work on Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/shop/RBGIFTS4U

Thank you to everyone who cheers me on—family, friends, and collectors who’ve listened to more pencil talk than anyone should. Your encouragement (and honest feedback) keeps me going through all those late nights and sharpened pencils.
